When you make a bet on half of the numbers – e.g. red or black, odd or even, or 1 to 18 and 19 to 36, you have an almost 50% chance of winning. But just almost – because of the zero(s).

Betting on a different selection of numbers comes with different odds and different house edges. When you make a straight bet in a one 0 version roulette, you have a chance of 1 to 37 to win, however, the payout is not 1 to 37 but 1 to 35 – the difference is the house edge. When you bet on red, your chance of winning is 18 to 37 and your payout is going to be 1 to 1.

Martingale system

The Martingale system is the best-known roulette strategy. How the system works is this:

• You double your wager after a loss
• You keep the same wager after a win

The limitations of this system are that you might run out of money or you might reach the maximum table limit.

Labouchère system

The idea behind this system is that you determine how much you want to win, divide it into smaller bets, and write them down in a row. When you win you cancel the numbers out of your list and when you lose you add new bets on your list as follows:

• Wager the first plus the last number on your list
• If you win, cross them out and progress to the next two numbers
• If you lose, you add the lost amount at either end of the list

D’Alembert System

This is a more careful system than the previous two and it aims at minimizing your losses. It is similar to the Martingale system but you don’t have to double your stake after every loss therefore it is less likely that you will run out of money or reach the table limit. It is based on units of bets and it works like this:

• Add one more unit of the wager after each loss
• Deduct one unit of the wager after each win

Fibonacci system

The Fibonacci sequence is a mathematical sequence used in many fields, including trading and it is also found in nature. It works like this: The next number is found by adding up the two numbers before it – 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, …

• You increase the wager every time you lose according to the Fibonacci sequence
• If you win, you can go back to the original wager or the last wager before the win
